Horse riding (especially dressage)
is a favorite hobby of mine.
NB: the horse is on the right…;-)

What you get when I help you with your writing and other content, is the benefit of years of experience across all – and I mean  all – media, both online and offline. But that’s only part of the story.

Because experience is only as good as experience does. Now … not 10 years ago, and not even last year.

So what you get is all that experience distilled into one very, very powerful bag of tricks, mixed together with up-to-the-minute know-how about where it’s at today. If you check me out on Google, you’ll see that I hang around online a lot, keeping well ahead of the posse.

Content strategy for business

Devising, planning and implementing online content may use similar techniques, but there are subtle differences based on the different platforms you use and the variances in their audiences. This needs some careful checking if you’re going to spend your money effectively. Before we write anything, we need to be sure that your strategy is right for you in the first place.

That doesn’t mean anything fancy: purely that with my background and experience I can sit down with you (virtually or in person) and help you work through what you really need to be saying to your readers, customers and prospects so they a) know exactly why they need you and b) how what you do will help them become more successful.

Website text

Even though we’re moving towards the more fluid environment of blog-based websites, you still need powerful words for that home page, the about page, the FAQ, and more.

You probably know more about your product or service than anyone else in the world. And that’s the problem. These pages are so, so easily screwed up because you’re too close to the business. But I can take that love and passion of yours, blend it up with some objective, customer-focused spice, and make those words work a treat for you.

Here are a few samples of websites I’ve reformulated and written (or re-written) in the last year or so:

How To Write Better .net … This one! My own hosted WordPress website which I designed, conceived and started early in 2011 from nothing, and have built up to a PR3 site with more than 1,200 articles and tutorials on writing of all types (with a strong focus on business). The site was a winner in the 2015 UK Blog Awards and has been listed on Guy Kawasaki’s as one of the top 300 social media sites in the world. This year, after I had done mainly on-page SEO work on it, I managed to move it from page 8 to page 1 of Google over a few months. Considering the broad nature of the “how to write better” keyword, that is a pleasing result. HTWB currently receives 1,000 – 1,500 page views per day from all over the world.

The Milton Keynes Cancer Patient Partnership … WordPress, hosted – designed, conceived and SEO’d by me. (I’m chair of the partnership.) Organic No. 1 on Google for several local cancer searches, outranking Macmillan and MK Hospital Cancer Services on all of them.

ShortStay MK … site restructure and all writing for this company who rent out short-term serviced apartments. Since completion the site has suffered a little from interference from wannabee experts, but still looks and reads OK. First page of Google for all main keywords.

Addmonte … site of a wonderful Hungarian web developer with whom I have worked on this (his own) and the following three sites. All words by me and acting as advisor for content strategy and logic.

Business Growth Club MK … business networking with a difference. With this plus some changes to their meeting format the group’s membership has doubled and they’re running out of space with members and guests at their meetings. Worked on SEO for this one as well which moved them up to organic No. 2 on Google (from page 2) for their main keywords.

Holmes Accountancy … Lovely family firm of accountants who really understand small business and entrepreneurial needs. Did all SEO writing for this site, too.

Royal Candles … a stunning range of beautifully coloured, hand-carved elaborate candles to use as gifts or even promotional gifts, as they can be personalised even with a company logo. Not only was this a lovely product to write about, but also I really enjoyed learning about the ancient crafts and skills that go into creating each candle.

Flegg Projects … interesting challenge: to tackle this heavy industrial website’s text and make it of equal interest to technical customers as it is to their (non-technical) decision-makers. Re-wrote entire site.

Delapré Abbey … a beautiful but ramshackle old mansion in central England dating back to the times of Queen Eleanor, had been falling into disrepair. Just a mile from the centre of Northampton, a small city in England’s south Midlands, the possibilities for renovating and rejuvenating the Abbey and its amazing grounds were very exciting. As always, funding was an issue. But finally the restoration programme began and is now well-advanced. I was honoured to write the text for its new website via Delapré’s marketing consultant.

Blogging for business

This is a business blogsite. Along with some wonderful guest columnists we’ve produced more than 1,000 articles/posts here. We’ve had more than 2 million page views in 4 years (not bad for a niche site). I know how to write content, and I know how to teach you to blog and write other content for your business, too (see below). Or if you’d rather I do it for you, I’m a truly spooky ghost blogger.

Video and audio scripts

Writing for the spoken word is different from what you write for text or print. If you don’t know the difference you can end up recording very lumpy sounding voice tracks. I have written, produced and directed more video and audio programs than you can shake a stick at, and the soft skills involved haven’t changed over the last couple of decades even though the technology has. If you’ve got a script to write, I’ve got the knack.

Social media consulting

Before we go any further I am not  a social media “guru.” What I do offer, however, is first-hand experience at promoting my own business via the SocMed which has led to this site doing very well, as described above.

Result? I use this experience to help clients with some straight-talking peer-to-peer advice based on very fresh learning.

Offline media

Remember those old things called brochures, leaflets, press ads, press releases, etc.? Much as some in the online world would have us believe that print is dead, it ain’t. Being a bit older than a 12-year-old I remember how to write for print and am enjoying its current sort-of renaissance. If you are, too, we need to talk.

Training workshops for blogging and content writing

As mentioned above, not only do I write blogs and other content for clients: I can also teach you how to do it for yourself, if that’s what you prefer. Once you’ve experienced one of my online writing workshops, you’ll know how to…

  • Get to know your audience as well as you know yourself, so you always choose topics they’ll find interesting
  • Create a business content and blogging strategy that keeps your objectives in focus without strangling them
  • View your business and topics objectively so you see them (and write about them) from the readers’ point of view
  • Move beyond the more traditional style of blog and social media posts and open up whole new areas of interest to your readers
  • Worry less about how to write and focus on creating a written conversation with your readers
  • Create and maintain a successful, business-building content marketing strategy over months and years

Speech writing

Got to make a presentation at work? A speech at a wedding? Don’t laugh, but for a long time in the 1990s I was the Grandma Moses of speech writing in the south of England. Amazingly I’m still in demand to write speeches that sizzle, inspire, and make audiences laugh. If you need some help with writing a speech I have experience in anything from bar mitzvahs (everywhere) to (UK) political keynotes, with literally hundreds of business and social topics in between: help yourself.

How much?

I’m not cheap, but you get a lot of bang for your buck. Because I’ve been around the business writing block a few times I know how to keep the hours down, and the quality up.

Let’s talk … by text/call on +44 (0) 7767 354 090 … by email ( … Skype (Suzan St Maur) … I look forward to showing you how I can help you get brilliant results from your written words.
