How to write a LinkedIn profile: does yours suck as much as mine does?

With a background like mine … as I say in the profile, I’ve written professionally for every medium there is apart from tablets of stone and that’s only because I’m useless with a hammer and chisel … it’s hard to know just how to set out my stall in a way that clients and potential clients will benefit from now.

  1. Susan, I like it. With one exception: I find the the hammer and chisel para a bit clunky. That said, I can relate. I’m in a similar bag – I’ve written a book and as a journalist, hundreds of articles on everything from soup to nuts. The bulk of my experience is divided almost equally between journalism and public relations, so I feel your pain.
    I like your emphasis on blogging and am keen to see what other responses you get on whether to narrow it down (blogging) or leave it broad, offering other services like you do at the end.

    • I shouldn’t laugh, Jane, but I have to say I find using a hammer and chisel very clunky indeed, hence why I don’t do it! I take your point though and thanks for making it.

      One of the problems nowadays as that being a generalist just isn’t fashionable – people want you to work in a niche and the more specialized the better, hence my focus on blog writing. that’s not a bad thing though; I love blogging and love showing people how to do theirs better, so feel very happy about it.

      From what you say I gather you have to deal with the same issues. Let’s hope that widespread expertise over a large number of genres and disciplines will come back into fashion one of these days… 😉

  2. Good post. I’ve struggled with exactly the same issues: diverse experience and multiple interests, all of which is difficult to digest into succinct statements that will get noticed. One thing I can suggest is to think about what kind of work you like doing most and making your first phrases appeal to those kinds of clients. It might not be helpful to consider the profile as a letter to potential clients. And it would be important for us to get it right because this is what people assess your suitability for their projects on. You don’t want to appear long-winded with complex information. They all have this problem, too!

    • Thanks Christine. As I said to Jane above, being a generalist just isn’t trendy at the moment. In the last few years I find that if I reel off the writing experience I have people’s eyes begin to glaze over (either literally or metaphorically) after I get to about genre #3. So my inclination is to focus sharply on blogging which (again, as I said to Jane) I love dearly anyway.

      But it’s a bit frustrating if I find I have been passed over for a web text or email marketing job because “oh, well, we know you’re specialist blog writer…” !!

      Do you find that happens to you too?

      • Can’t really say I’m a specialist blog writer. (If I were you, I would dig a little if that comment came my way and point out the strengths I can offer that were developed through blogging.) I work out a lot of things and digest the stuff that come up in my day job. People at work are not usually interested in the actual skill used to write something. That’s seems to be more my thing. They just want to see the result.

        • Absolutely, Christine – that’s why I’ve tried to angle my profile text so that it relates directly to what I can do for “you,” the client, rather than what I have done generally. I believe it’s very important to stay focused on that.

    Interesting post, Christine. I’m a generalist too (Translation and revision) and I agree with your analysis. Because of this, I’m initiating a small marketing campaign with my clients to promote one of my other services. You could try writing your profile based only on blogging, then add another line or two, “I can also help you in other areas, such as . . .” and list your other areas of expertise. Also, I think your text could be tightened up a bit to help the salient points stand out.

    • I like the sound of this. I know you have great things to add to your résumé. Don’t be shy to toot your own horn on the many things you are most proud of having achieved.

      • I hear what you say about not being shy about tooting your own horn … as someone once said, “if you don’t think you’re good, why the hell should I?”

        However as I live in the UK I’m conscious of the British culture that regards tooting your own horn as rather vulgar and boastful. Mostly that is driven by jealousy – so sad, really.

    • That’s an excellent idea, Christine – in fact I have made a note to search for those articles and curate a selection of the best ones I can find (in my opinion, anyway). Will get on to that next week!
