In Guy Kawasaki’s I’m honored! (And why content curation is such good news, too…)

If you’re into social media you’ll know that Guy Kawasaki is the social media guru to beat all gurus. So when I found out that my humble site (this one) was in his’s top 300-odd social media sites, I was gobsmacked. And thrilled.

Guy who?

In case you don’t know the lovely Mr Kawasaki, here is a brief excerpt from his website

Guy Kawasaki is a special advisor to the Motorola business unit of Google. He is also the author of APE, What the Plus!, Enchantment, and nine other books. Previously, he was the chief evangelist of Apple. Kawasaki has a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA as well as an honorary doctorate from Babson College.

In brief, he is recognised by many and even worshipped by some UK so-called “social media experts” I could name, as the ultimate expert who should be revered and adored. However, much as I may chuckle at the sycophants genuflecting at the sound of Guy Kawasaki’s name, I have to say I really admire the guy.

Not just because his organization (or his robots!) have picked my site as a goodie, but also because I’ve read a lot of what he writes and hey – he makes sense. On top of that he seems like a nice, ordinary, delightful and incredibly intelligent man. That’s important to me!

AllTop? What’s that?

I won’t bore you with any more bragging and boasting, but it’s nice to be recognized for your hard work and perseverance, isn’t it? And even more so when it has been so judged by someone whose opinion you respect.

So, have a look here. It’s the essential social media and other internet-based curation station to beat all others, detailing the best (in their view) blogsites from around the world on a wide variety of topics.

Its beauty is that by curating the best blogsites, judged by people whose opinion you respect, it saves you a lot of time and effort by sending you directly to sites that are useful  – the research groundwork has all been done, and you know you can rely on it having been done properly.

How your  blog or website can benefit

You don’t necessarily have to impress Guy Kawasaki! However what you DO need to do is to make sure your blog writing creates a presence for you within your own circles that establishes and sustains you as someone who knows what they’re talking about.

You don’t have to put yourself across as an expert, unless you really are one. Frankly, what’s more useful for your readers  – and more credible – is if you put yourself across as someone who knows a lot about your subject, but also knows where to go and find more specific and/or specialized advice. Hence, content curation.

Curation plus content is the way forward

Increasingly you’ll find that your readers / customers will welcome your advice not only in terms of the pointers of your own that you share with them, but also the advice and tips you cull from your observation of what else is going on online within your industry.

blogging,writing,blog writing,business,newsletter,,How To Write Better,Suzan St MaurRecently I’ve set up a new eNewsletter here on HTWB, Blog Writing News, that focuses not just on what I write about blogging, but also curates the best articles I come across on the internet about that topic, written by other people. Since I’ve switched to that format my mailing list trebled in size and is still growing very fast.

As with all social media / inbound marketing related activities, curation focuses on sharing information. And I firmly believe that by sharing the right information from other sources, as well as your own, you achieve two useful things:

1)Demonstrate to your readers/customers that you know your stuff by picking articles / blog posts you know they will appreciate, as well as sharing your own views and advice

2)Take the pressure off yourself to write extensive new content every time you post by spreading the load and, frankly, spreading the interest … several people’s views are likely to be more interesting than just yours, or just theirs

Have a look at Cendrine Marrouat’s article on here about content curation – she is an expert at it, and you could learn a lot from what she says … as I did!

  1. I go on and off content curation – as sometimes my brain says I am just super imposing on Google…they curate content, don’t they…? But that said I am hearing about it a fair ol’ bit…! Congratulations BTW! x

    • Thanks for the congrats! Actually, content curation in your area of business is probably more difficult, because there are so many slight and subtle variants of what you do that may appear similar to an outsider but which, to an insider, are quite different.

      Does anyone (including you Sarupa, of course!) have some thoughts on that issue? I would be interested to learn more from you guys.
