The write way to get a jobIt’s increasingly hard to get a job – and a good one – these days, and although there is a lot to consider when you’re looking to get a job, effective business writing plays a major part in helping you succeed.

We’re very lucky to welcome Lynn Tulip as a new columnist on HowToWriteBetter – to share her tips on where good writing really counts in the whole process to get a job, and give us the benefit of her very considerable experience. The founder of popular career consultancy Assessment4Potential, Lynn leads a team of highly qualified experts helping thousands of job seekers of all ages get a job they truly want – and are ideally suited for. And to get us off to a good start, here Lynn’s checklist of the most important elements of your CV / résumé (she will be going into detail about CVs / résumés later in the series)….

Your CV / résumé must…

**Be structured so your material all fits on a maximum of two pages, printed one side only

**Not contain any spelling, grammatical or punctuation errors

**Show typing that is neat, clean and professional looking

**Show your name, address and contact details presented as a heading at the top

**Have margins at the sides and bottom of at least 3 cm wide

**Use a layout that makes reading easy

**Not use paragraphs longer than six lines each

**Have important titles emphasized in BOLD, underlining or capital letters (but not overdone)

**Use indentations and bullets to organise information logically

**Use action words to communicate achievements and results

**Not contain irrelevant personal information

**Use sentences and paragraphs which have been edited to eliminate unnecessary and redundant information

**Avoid repetition of words and phrases

**Have an overall appearance that invites one to read it

**Above all, demonstrate YOUR ability to produce results
