Online business writing – 10 Quick Tips

Online business writing - 10 Quick TipsIn this 10 Quick Tips we take a look at the key points you need to remember when you’re blogging or writing any other online content…

1) Stop writing utter sales poop thinly disguised as blog posts, SocMed posts or whatever: nobody is fooled any more. No matter how short your post is, it must have guts, intelligent content and be of some sort of value.

2) On the other hand, do not join the Knitting & Crochet Club of Social Media critics who yell “SPAM!!!” if you so much as hint that maybe you might make a living out of something. You have the right to say you’re in work and not a guru up in Himalayas living on fresh air and expectations.

3) Re: #2 and #3 above, be fair: only share your business connection if you have provided genuine value in what you post.

4) Once and for all, learn that writing online is not a decadent art: it’s simply speaking your mind on paper/screen.

5) Stop being reactive in your blogging and content writing, and start being proactive: be yourself.

6) Don’t be afraid to say what you mean: the worst that can happen is you get pursued by an invisible troll. As long as what you write is not offensive or untrue, go for it.

7) Don’t be bamboozled by the current trend for “story telling.” All it really means is you need to use examples, written up in a less-than-boring way.

8) Do you think that good grammar, spelling and punctuation don’t matter any more? Wrong. They do. Get over it and sharpen yours up so you don’t look unprofessional.

9) Want to write an eBook? Remember what some awful cynic said … “most people have a book in them and in most cases, that’s where it should stay.” Sadly they had a point. By all means write your eBook, but make sure it’s not a solution looking for a problem.

10) Don’t let writing intimidate you. Never forget that if you can talk, you can write.

What other key tips can you think of that should be included in this list? Please share!

  1. Useful post, Suzan. Thank you. I’m just starting out with my blog and finding writing a struggle, but it seems to be getting a little easier with time.
By the way, it was the late, great Christopher Hitchens who said “most people have a book in them and in most cases, that’s where it should stay.”

    Great quote 🙂

  2. Plug away! Thanks for the link, I’ll take a look and consider buying 🙂
